Files & Terminal
Anyy can read and search files, make targeted edits, run shell commands, and manage background process sessions. These tools are most useful when the session has a clear Workspace and objective.
File Tools
| Capability | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Read | Reads text or supported JPEG/PNG/GIF/WebP/BMP images; large text is bounded |
| List | Lists a directory alphabetically, including dotfiles |
| Find | Finds paths by glob while respecting .gitignore |
| Grep | Searches file content with paths and line numbers while respecting .gitignore |
| Write | Creates or overwrites one file and creates parent directories |
| Edit | Replaces exact, unique, non-overlapping text regions in one file |
Search results and reads are intentionally bounded. Ask Anyy to continue from an offset or narrow the search instead of assuming truncated output is complete.
Terminal Tools
The terminal can run a foreground shell command or start a managed background process. Managed processes support lifecycle actions such as list, poll, log, wait, write/submit input, close input, and kill.
Example requests:
In this Workspace, find every reference to the old setting and show me the affected files. Do not edit anything.
Run the focused tests for this package. If they pass, update the two affected files and summarize the diff.
File changes
write and edit apply the requested change directly. write creates missing parent directories; edit requires each replacement to match a unique, non-overlapping region. Invalid source-code syntax is written as requested, without an additional syntax-check step.
Relative paths are resolved from the tool's working directory. Absolute paths, parent-directory paths and ordinary symlinks follow filesystem semantics. Workspace supplies context; it does not restrict file access to one directory. The operating-system permissions still apply.
Changes to the same target are queued in order. If a file operation fails or is canceled after I/O starts, inspect the file before retrying; completed effects are not rolled back automatically.
Working pattern
- Ask Anyy to inspect and explain the current state.
- Request a specific change and name the relevant paths.
- Review the resulting diff.
- Run focused validation.
Runtime and dependencies
The local bash tool runs a shell on the Anyy host, using the configured shell or an available bash, with /bin/sh as the fallback. Commands need their own executables, interpreters and credentials in that environment. A command available on your client computer is not necessarily available on the resident host.
grep uses rg; find uses fd or fdfind. Anyy checks the Profile's bin/, then PATH, and can acquire a missing helper from its official release. ANYY_OFFLINE=1 disables acquisition while allowing installed helpers; Android skips acquisition. See search helper availability.
The portable file tools initially selected by default are read, bash, edit and write. grep, find and ls can be selected separately or called through an active Codemode when eligible. Use the current catalog for the actual selection.
Known credentials are redacted before results and process logs are exposed. Model-visible output and programmatic returns have separate bounds. For example, Codemode's tools.bash returns output, truncated, exit_code and wall_time_seconds; output over 1 MiB retains a head/tail value plus full_output_path. A nonzero exit can still resolve this object, so inspect exit_code. Follow text-read continuation hints or use a valid logical result ref with tool_result_read.
Background Processes
Use a managed process for a server, watcher, or long-running test. Ask Anyy to report its process session handle, poll or show logs, and stop it when the task ends. A process belongs to the conversation that started it; another conversation cannot send input, read its logs or stop it.
The default limit is four managed background processes across the Profile's conversations. Foreground shell commands are outside this limit. Finished jobs are not signalled again. After a resident restart, a saved process ID alone cannot restore control; Anyy reports unavailable control instead of stopping a process by an old ID.
See Background Jobs for independent agent work.
